Lake Minnewanka Beer Voyage, evening and family cruises

There is no sunset or dinner cruise on Lake Minnewanka. The latest boats are the 18+ Beer Voyage at 5 p.m. and the evening Premium Cruise at 6 or 7 p.m.; for the lake after dark, a stargazing or sunset wildlife tour does the job. Families get their own daytime sailing, the Junior Explorer.

The short answer: two late sailings, no sunset cruise

Pursuit, the only company running sightseeing cruises on the lake, sells four scheduled sailings — the Classic, the Premium, the Beer Voyage and the Junior Explorer — plus private charters. None is a sunset, dinner or evening cruise as such. To be on the lake late in the day, you have three choices:

  • the Beer Voyage, daily at 5 p.m., about 1.5 hours, adults 18+ only;
  • the evening Premium Cruise, at 6 or 7 p.m., about an hour;
  • the last Classic boats, which leave until about 6–7 p.m. in peak summer (about 5 p.m. in May, early June, September and October).

The Beer Voyage and Premium run only from late May to late September. In midsummer it stays light long after the last boat is back, so treat these as late-afternoon cruises; for dusk or the stars, book a tour on land (below).

The Beer Voyage, Premium and Junior Explorer are sold on Pursuit's website, not on GetYourGuide, which carries the Classic ticket in season. Fares and channels: tickets and prices.

The Beer Voyage: what you actually get

This is what turns up when you search for a Lake Minnewanka beer cruise or booze cruise: a guided tasting on the water, not a party boat.

  • Who: 18+ only. A family with teenagers needs a different sailing.
  • When: daily at 5 p.m., late May to late September.
  • How long: about 1.5 hours.
  • The beer: each pair of guests shares four different local craft beers to sample. Not four beers each.
  • The food: a warm pretzel-sourdough bun. That's a snack, not supper.
  • The route: all the way to Devil's Gap, the glacier-cut gap at the far east end where the mountains open to the prairies — the only sailing confirmed to go that far.
  • Fridays: hosted by a different Alberta brewer each time; beer fans, aim for one.

It's the priciest of the scheduled sailings (check the live price when you book), and the Alberta resident saving doesn't apply.

A Beer Voyage evening
  1. Park, or step off Roam Route 6The dock is a 10-minute walk from the lot, past the Black Anchor Snack Shop

  2. Check in at the ticket office on the dockAt least 15 minutes before departure

  3. Cast off and head eastTastings and the bun on the way out

  4. Devil's GapThe far east end of a lake about 21 km (13 mi) long

  5. Back at the dockDinner in Banff is 15–20 minutes' drive away

Getting home. Roam Transit Route 6 is free with a same-day, pre-purchased cruise ticket — show it to the driver — and takes about 25 minutes to downtown Banff. Buses run every 30–60 minutes, so check the last departure. In peak summer Pursuit has also run a free shuttle from downtown Banff hotels for ticket holders. If you're driving, plan your share of the tastings accordingly.

Bring a warm layer even in July: the lake is cooler and windier than town.

The evening Premium Cruise

The Premium is the more polished late option: about an hour, late May to late September, with a 10 a.m. sailing, an evening one at 6 or 7 p.m., and a midday one in peak summer and September.

What the extra money buys: VIP check-in, upgraded seating on a refreshed boat, a mimosa (with a non-alcoholic option), pine-needle tea from Jolene's Tea House, chocolate-covered Saskatoon berries from Le Chocolatier, water and a souvenir postcard. The tour is more personal, and it costs more than the Classic (no Alberta rate).

Pick it over the Beer Voyage if someone in your group doesn't drink beer or is under 18 (check the Premium's age rules when you book). Pick the Beer Voyage for the longer run to Devil's Gap.

The cheapest late option is the last Classic of the day. Wildlife is likeliest early and late in the day, so late boats have slightly better odds — possible, never guaranteed.

Junior Explorer: the family cruise

Not an evening sailing, but the Lake Minnewanka family cruise: late June to Labour Day, at 12:40 p.m. and 3:20 p.m., about an hour.

  • Who it's for: kids roughly 6–12 and their families.
  • On board: a treasure hunt, games, stories of local characters and "lake monsters", and a kids' journal.
  • After: a cool treat at the dock.
  • The deal: one free child (6–15) for each full-paying adult. Extra children pay the child rate, and it can't be combined with other offers. Sold on Pursuit's website.

Kids 5 and under ride free on any cruise but must be on the booking; every sailing runs Pursuit's free "Rockies Rangers" kids' badge program.

For a late family sailing, take the last Classic. How the hour unfolds: cruise guide.

After the last boat: evening tours you can book

Once the boats are tied up, these bookable GetYourGuide tours take over. Most can be cancelled for free up to a set time before; check each listing.

Stargazing at Minnewanka and Two Jack. The Lake Minnewanka Stop & Two Jack Lake Stargazing Tour by Into the Wild Tours is the one evening product built around this lake: a small group (13 at most), pickup in Canmore and Banff, May to October. It starts with a guided lakeside walk at Lake Minnewanka, then spends about two hours of stargazing at Two Jack Lake with a telescope, binoculars, heated chairs and hot drinks. About 5 hours in all, currently about $125 CAD direct or about $142 on GetYourGuide, fully refunded if cancelled for weather (up to 24 hours). Not suitable for reduced mobility.

Sunset and wildlife by van. The Evening Scenic Sunset Tour with Wildlife Spotting is a 2-hour run of viewpoints at golden hour, from about $69. Minnewanka is one possible stop, not a promised one. For a longer dusk outing, the Sunset Scenic Tour of Alpine Lakes & Wildlife at Dusk runs about 3 hours from about $198; check the listing for which lakes it visits.

Night sky from Banff. The Banff Stargazing Tour is a 2-hour guided outing from about $92, with headlamps and lanterns, and the Night Sky: Stargazing and Northern Lights Chasing Tour runs about 3 hours from about $149. Neither promises Minnewanka.

Discover Banff Tours runs a 2-hour Evening Wildlife Safari with hotel pickup, April to October (currently from about $73 direct); routes follow wildlife activity, so Minnewanka isn't promised. See our Discover Banff Tours review.

The heli flight over the lake and more wildlife and night-sky choices are on helicopter, stargazing and wildlife tours.

Spending the evening at the lake on your own

No ticket needed: the day-use areas are open 7 a.m.–11 p.m., parking is free (no overnight parking), and you need a park pass.

  • Walk Stewart Canyon: easy, about an hour return. From July 10 to September 15 the group-of-four rule applies only beyond the bridge. See hikes.
  • Watch for sheep on the road above Two Jack Lake, and keep at least 30 m away (100 m from bears and wolves).
  • Bear spray: carry it on trails, but it isn't allowed on the cruise boats — leave it in the car if you're sailing first.
  • Eat first: the Black Anchor Snack Shop closes around the last sailing. Mobile signal is patchy.
  • Off-season: no cruise from mid-October to early May, but the lake stays reachable by car; Parks Canada doesn't monitor natural ice. See schedule and season.
