When the Lake Minnewanka cruise runs

The cruise season runs from early or mid-May to Canadian Thanksgiving Monday in October, weather permitting. Thanksgiving falls on the second Monday of October, so the short version is "May to mid-October". The exact opening day moves a little from year to year; Pursuit, which runs the boats, sets it for each season.

Everything at the dock follows the cruise calendar. The ticket office, the boat rentals and the Black Anchor Snack Shop open for the season and close with it. Outside those months there is no boat, no food and no ticket counter at the lake, only the parking lot, washrooms and the shoreline.

The grid sets the cruise beside everything else that opens and closes around the lake.

At the edges of the season, two more dates matter. The specialty cruises (Premium and the Beer Voyage) only sail from late May to late September, and the family-focused Junior Explorer only from late June to Labour Day. If you arrive in the first or last weeks of the season, you'll find the Classic Cruise only.

Departure times through the season

Timetables change from year to year, so treat this as the current pattern and confirm the time on your ticket. In peak summer boats leave about every 30 minutes from about 9 a.m. to 6–7 p.m. In May, early June, September and October the day is shorter, about 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Premium CruiseAbout 1 hourLate May to late September10 a.m. and 6 or 7 p.m., plus midday in peak summer and September
Beer Voyage (18+)About 1.5 hoursLate May to late SeptemberDaily at 5 p.m.
Junior ExplorerAbout 1 hourLate June to Labour Day12:40 p.m. and 3:20 p.m.

There is no sunset, dinner or dedicated evening cruise. The latest scheduled sailings are the 6–7 p.m. Premium and the 5 p.m. Beer Voyage. For the lake after dark, see evenings at Lake Minnewanka.

Timed tickets go on sale about 90 days ahead, so you can lock in a May or June sailing well before the boats are back in the water. The tickets guide covers prices and where each variant is sold; the cruise guide covers what you see on board.

How long the cruise takes, and how long to allow

The Classic Cruise lasts about 1 hour, including the safety briefing and boarding. The boat leaves the dock at the west end, heads east down the lake toward Devil's Gap, then turns back; nobody gets off along the way. Only the Beer Voyage, at about 1.5 hours, goes all the way to Devil's Gap.

The hour on the water is easy to plan; getting to the boat is where people run late. The ticket office is on the boarding docks, a 10-minute walk from the parking lot, and you need to check in at least 15 minutes before departure. Pursuit asks you to allow plenty of time: up to two hours if you're driving in summer.

Example: a summer morning with a 10 a.m. sailing
  1. Park at Lake MinnewankaArriving before 9 a.m. beats the July and August rush for spaces

  2. Walk to the dockAbout 10 minutes past the Black Anchor Snack Shop; use the washrooms by the lot, as the boats have none

  3. Check in at the ticket officeAt least 15 minutes before departure

  4. SailSafety briefing, then east down the lake and back

  5. Back at the dockTime for the Stewart Canyon walk, about 1 hour return

From downtown Banff the drive is 15–20 minutes, so a cruise and a short walk fit easily into a morning. If you only have about two and a half hours, drive in for an early sailing and skip the hike. The bus is cheaper, but it runs every 30–60 minutes, which can eat a tight window. The getting-there guide has drive times, Roam Transit Route 6 and parking.

Best time of day: crowds, wind and wildlife

The first sailings of the day and weekdays are the calmest. In July and August the parking lots fill by mid-morning, earlier on weekends. Arrive before 9 a.m. or take Route 6, which is free with a same-day, pre-purchased cruise ticket (show it to the driver).

Wind is the other reason to sail early. Parks Canada warns of very sudden strong winds and waves on Lake Minnewanka, especially in the afternoon. The covered, heated cabin keeps you dry either way, but the open back deck is far nicer on a still morning. Bring a warm layer even in July.

Wildlife likes the edges of the day too. Bighorn sheep, bald eagles and occasionally bears or wolves on the slopes are possible, never guaranteed, and your odds are best on the first and last sailings. Mount Aylmer, the big peak above the north shore, is on your left as the boat heads out.

Best month to cruise Lake Minnewanka

July and August bring the full timetable, every cruise variant and the warmest weather, along with the biggest crowds. June is a little quieter but is the wettest month. September is the sweet spot for many visitors: the specialty cruises still sail until late September, the crowds thin after Labour Day, and the summer group-of-four rule on the trails beyond Stewart Canyon ends on September 15.

These are Environment and Climate Change Canada averages for Banff town; the lake sits about 100 m higher and is a little cooler than town.

August22.1 °C5.8 °C47 mm0 cm
September16.7 °C2.2 °C45 mm8 cm
October9.1 °C−2.4 °C36 mm17 cm

Even in July, the warmest month, nights stay cool, with average lows around 6–7 °C. Snow can fall in May and again from September, so the shoulder months call for a proper jacket, not a hoodie.

Visiting Lake Minnewanka in May

A May cruise is possible from the opening day in early or mid-May onwards. Expect a shorter day (about 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), the Classic Cruise only until the Premium and Beer Voyage start in late May, and average highs around 14 °C in town with nights near freezing.

May has a transport catch. Roam Route 6 starts again in mid or late May, and the cruise usually opens about a week before the bus does. For the first days of the season you'll need a car, a taxi or a tour. The western, Bankhead side of the Minnewanka Loop is closed to cars from November to May to protect a wildlife corridor, so you may still have to drive in on the eastern side past Two Jack Lake.

Other May notes: the park fishing season opens on the Saturday of the Victoria Day long weekend, the shore between Stewart Canyon and Sheep Point closes each spring (roughly May to the end of June), and the Stewart Canyon trail can be very icy early in spring. The reward is a quiet dock. The hikes guide lists what's walkable in spring.

Visiting Lake Minnewanka in October

An October cruise is possible until Thanksgiving Monday and not a day later. The day is short again (about 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.), the Premium and Beer Voyage have finished for the year, and average highs in town drop to about 9 °C, with lows below freezing and snow possible.

Route 6 stops in early October, about a week before the cruise does, so the last days of the season need a car, taxi or tour. Pursuit's multi-attraction passes have also had valid dates shorter than the cruise season, so check the pass dates before counting on one for an October sailing.

The upside is the quietest cruising of the year and longer, darker evenings. The stargazing tour that pairs a lakeside walk at Minnewanka with telescopes at Two Jack Lake runs from May to October and costs from about $142, and northern lights are possible on dark nights from autumn to spring during strong solar activity, never guaranteed.

Weather, cancellations and missed sailings

The season and each day's sailings are weather dependent; Pursuit's terms say dates and times can change without notice when conditions require. A heated cabin handles a grey, drizzly day well. Wind and waves are the thing to watch.

Pursuit does not publish what happens to your ticket if it cancels a sailing for weather, so contact Pursuit about rebooking (the cruise booking line is 1-866-474-4766). Tickets bought from Pursuit are non-refundable. You can change the date through the "Modify My Booking" link in your confirmation email, subject to availability and possibly at a different rate. If you miss your sailing, you can rebook a later one if there's room, for a rebooking fee (currently $15 per person). On GetYourGuide, check the listing's cancellation terms before you book.

Winter at Lake Minnewanka

From the day after Thanksgiving Monday until May there is no cruise, no rentals, no snack shop and no ticket office. The lake stays open: you can drive there, walk the shore and take photos, and the day-use area is open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. with no overnight parking. Bring your own food and a park pass.

Getting there in winter

The western (Bankhead) section of the Minnewanka Loop is closed to cars from November to May. Lake Minnewanka, Two Jack Lake, Johnson Lake and Cascade Ponds stay reachable on the eastern side: follow the open eastern leg past Two Jack Lake to the dam. Route 6 doesn't run in winter, so it's a car, a taxi or a tour.

Ice, skating and ice fishing

Parks Canada does not monitor or mark natural ice; you go out at your own risk. Its guidance is at least 15 cm of clear ice to walk or skate alone and 20 cm for groups, and grey ice is unsafe. Lake Minnewanka freezes late because it's so big and deep, and there can be open water farther out even when the edge looks solid. At Two Jack Lake, stay well away from the dam at the east end, where the ice stays thin. In an emergency call 911. Cascade Ponds, at the start of the loop, is a smaller spot where people skate, under the same at-your-own-risk rule.

There is no ice fishing: the park fishing season runs only from the Victoria Day long weekend to Labour Day (see fishing at Lake Minnewanka). The famous frozen-bubble photos are mostly from Abraham Lake, about three hours north and outside the park. Minnewanka does get methane bubbles in some winters, often far from the road, so don't count on them.

Walking and what to book instead

Stewart Canyon is a winter walk and snowshoe route, about 1.5 km each way from the day-use area, and it can be very icy, especially in spring. Wear proper footwear and turn back if the path is glazed. For more winter options around Banff, see things to do near the lake.

Day tours that list the cruise run year-round but replace it with other stops off-season, so don't book one in winter expecting to sail. These winter tours from Banff are bookable on GetYourGuide:

Booking a cruise day tour in season

A day tour from Banff or Calgary takes parking and buses off your hands. Most third-party tours with "Lake Minnewanka cruise" in the title only stop at the lake, with the cruise optional at your own cost, so check whether the cruise ticket is included in the listing before you book. Two options are the cruise, gondola and top three lakes tour (10 hours, from about $95 CAD) and the gondola, cruise, hot spring and lakes tour (10 hours, from about $111).

See all on GetYourGuide →Prices from GetYourGuide, checked October 19, 2026; they change with date and group size.

Pursuit's own cruise ticket appears on GetYourGuide only in season; off-season the Lake Minnewanka listing shows the year-round tours instead. The day tours guide compares what each one includes.
