The short answer: most tours stop at the lake, and the boat is up to you
If you are looking for Banff tours with a Lake Minnewanka cruise, know this first: most full-day van and coach tours with "Minnewanka cruise" in the title pull into the lake's parking lot for a stop. Some leave time for the boat; the cruise ticket is usually optional and paid by you. A few name Minnewanka in the title and then visit Johnson Lake. So check whether the cruise ticket is included in the listing, in the "Includes" section rather than the headline.
The cruise itself is run by Pursuit, under its Banff Jasper Collection brand, the only company running sightseeing cruises on the lake. It lasts about an hour, including the safety briefing and boarding, and sails only from early or mid-May to Thanksgiving Monday in October. Outside those months no tour, whatever its title, can put you on the boat. The full picture of the sailing is on the cruise page.
Only two kinds of product are confirmed to bundle a cruise ticket:
- Pursuit's own Brewster Sightseeing "Explore Banff", a guided coach day from Banff (or Calgary) that includes Banff Gondola and cruise admission. Its prices exclude taxes and fees, and it can be cancelled up to 24 hours before. It is sold on Pursuit's website, not on GetYourGuide.
- Pursuit's own tickets on GetYourGuide: the cruise ticket alone and a sightseeing + cruise + Banff Gondola package. Both disappear from GetYourGuide once the season ends, and return with the boats. Prices and booking options are on the tickets page.
The arithmetic that gives a listing away
The Classic Cruise currently costs from about $80 plus GST per adult (about $84 with GST). A Banff Gondola ride is a separate ticket on top of that. The full-day tours in this group sell for about $60–110 (all prices here in CAD, per adult, at the time of writing) for 8–10 hours with a guide, a vehicle and fuel, and often the gondola or the hot springs on the itinerary as well.
Those numbers cannot cover a gondola ticket and a cruise ticket for everyone on board. When a $75 day lists the gondola, the hot springs, Lake Louise and a "Minnewanka boat tour", at least one of those is a stop where you pay at the door, or a photo from the shore.
None of this makes the tours poor value. A guided day with Lake Louise, Bow Falls and a Minnewanka stop for under $100 is a fair deal without a car, and the Moraine Lake road is closed to private vehicles year-round, so a licensed tour is one of the few ways in. Just budget for the boat as an extra.

How to read a day-tour listing
Six checks before you book
- Read the "Includes" list, not the title. "Cruise ticket" or "cruise admission" under Includes means included. "Optional", "at own expense", or no mention at all means a stop. If it is unclear, message the operator through the listing and keep the reply.
- Find the lake in the itinerary. Lake Minnewanka, Two Jack Lake and Johnson Lake are three different lakes on the same loop road, and Johnston Canyon is a different place again. A title that says Minnewanka over a summary that says Johnson Lake may well be a stop at Johnson Lake.
- Decode the slash. "Moraine/Minnewanka" in a title means Minnewanka replaces Moraine Lake when the Moraine road is closed. You get one lake or the other, not both, and still no cruise.
- Check the length of the stop. To fit the cruise into a tour you need roughly 90 minutes at the lake: a 10-minute walk from the parking lot to the dock, check-in at least 15 minutes before departure, an hour on the water, and the walk back. A 30-minute photo stop cannot hold it.
- Check the date against the season. The boats run from early or mid-May to Thanksgiving Monday in October, weather permitting. A tour on a date outside that window will not include a cruise, whatever the photos show.
- Check the extras and the terms. Everyone in the park needs a national park pass, so see whether the tour covers it. Most tours on GetYourGuide can be cancelled for free up to a set time before; check each listing.
If a tour gives you enough time and you want the boat, buy a timed cruise ticket yourself for a sailing that fits the stop. Booking opens about 90 days ahead; there is a ticket office at the dock in season, but walk-up seats are first come, first served and a given time isn't guaranteed. Tickets bought from Pursuit are non-refundable, so get the tour's arrival time in writing before you buy.
A cancelled sailing is your problem, not the tour's
The cruise is weather dependent, and the lake is windier than town. If you bought the cruise separately and the sailing is cancelled, contact Pursuit about rebooking; the tour van will not wait for the next boat.
Banff day tours that visit Lake Minnewanka, compared
Nine tours currently bookable on GetYourGuide that name Lake Minnewanka or its cruise. The last column summarises what each listing's own title and summary say. It is not a confirmation of what is included, so read the listing before you pay. Ratings are GetYourGuide stars and review counts, which move often.
| Tour | From where | Length | From | Rating | What it says about Minnewanka |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lake Minnewanka Cruise, Gondola & Top 3 Lakes | Pickup (points in the listing) | 10 h | about $95 | 4.8 (4 reviews) | Lists the cruise; check whether the ticket is included |
| Gondola, Lake Minnewanka Cruise, Hot Spring & Lakes | Calgary, Canmore or Banff | 10 h | about $110 | 4.4 (15) | Cruise in the title, "visit to Lake Minnewanka" in the summary; check inclusion |
| Gondola, Hot Springs, Lake Louise & Three Lakes | Pickup (points in the listing) | 10 h | about $75 | 4.5 (268) | Mentions Minnewanka "boat tours", which reads like a stop; check |
| Gondola, Hot Spring and Three Lakes | Calgary or Canmore | 8 h | about $70 | 4.4 (237) | Mentions a boat tour and Johnson Lake; check which lake and what's included |
| Gondola, Hot Spring, Johnston Canyon, Lake Minnewanka | Calgary (bus tour) | 8 h | about $80 | 4.8 (50) | A lake stop, no cruise mentioned; gondola or hot springs, not both |
| Louise, Banff Gondola, Minnewanka & Emerald Lakes | Pickup (points in the listing) | 8–10 h | about $85 | 4.4 (257) | Minnewanka in the title, Johnson Lake in the summary; ask which |
| Lake Louise, Emerald, Moraine/Minnewanka & Johnston Canyon | Canmore or Banff | 10 h | about $95 | 4.9 (64) | Minnewanka stands in for Moraine Lake when that road is closed; no cruise mentioned |
| Best of Banff Signature Express | Banff, hotel pickup | 2.5 h | about $45 | 4.7 (25) | A viewpoint stop with Two Jack Lake; no cruise |
| Banff Highlights & Wildlife, small group | Banff | 3 h | about $190 | 4.4 (313) | A lake visit on a short wildlife loop; no cruise |
Two patterns stand out. The listings with hundreds of reviews make no promise of a cruise ticket, and the tour with "Cruise" first in its title has four reviews, too few to tell you much. The best-rated full day, the Moraine/Minnewanka tour, makes no cruise claim at all.

What happens in the off-season
From mid-October to early May the cruise doesn't run, and neither do the ticket office, the boat rentals or the Black Anchor Snack Shop by the dock. Most of the tours above keep running, and many still stop at the lake. Lake Minnewanka stays reachable by road all winter on the eastern side of the Minnewanka Loop, even though the western (Bankhead) section closes to cars from November to May to protect a wildlife corridor.
What changes is the content: day tours replace the cruise with other stops. The "Moraine/Minnewanka" tours move the other way. When the Moraine Lake road is closed, Minnewanka takes its place, so in the colder months these are the tours most likely to bring you to this lake at all.
A winter stop is a quiet one: an empty dock, a cold, windy shore, perhaps bighorn sheep above Two Jack. Parks Canada does not monitor or mark natural ice, so enjoy it from the shore. If a winter tour sells "Minnewanka ice bubbles", know that the famous frozen-bubble photos are mostly from Abraham Lake, about three hours north and outside the park.
If you are planning a summer trip months ahead, the schedule, from the first sailings in May to the last ones on Thanksgiving Monday, is on the season and schedule page.
Pick by situation
From Calgary, without a car
Downtown Calgary is about 1 h 30–1 h 45 from the lake by road, so on a 10-hour tour from the city roughly three hours go to the highway. That is the price of not driving, and it is worth knowing before you compare a Calgary tour with a Banff one hour for hour.
The strongest Calgary option by reviews is the Gondola, Hot Spring, Johnston Canyon & Lake Minnewanka bus tour: 8 hours, from about $80, 4.8 from 50 reviews. You choose the gondola or the hot springs, Minnewanka is a stop, and you should check Parks Canada for current closures at Johnston Canyon. If you want a listing that names the cruise, Gondola, Lake Minnewanka Cruise, Hot Spring & Lakes picks up in Calgary, Canmore or Banff from about $110. The title says cruise and the summary says "visit", so ask before you book, and compare the price for each pickup point in the checkout.
The do-it-yourself alternative from Calgary: Brewster Express runs from the airport or downtown Calgary to Banff hotels year-round (about 2 hours, from about $67 one way, plus taxes and fees), and in summer Roam Transit Route 6 takes you from downtown Banff to the lake. Details on the getting there page.
Short on time
If you have a morning, the Best of Banff Signature Express is 2.5 hours with hotel pickup in Banff, from about $45, and stops at Two Jack Lake and Lake Minnewanka among other viewpoints. There is no cruise, and in that time there could not be.
If the cruise matters more than the viewpoints, skip the tour. From downtown Banff the lake is a 15–20 minute drive, or about 25 minutes on Route 6, which is free with a same-day, pre-purchased cruise ticket (show it to the driver). Bus, cruise and the ride back fill a summer half-day comfortably.
Small group
Banff Highlights & Wildlife is a 3-hour small-group tour from Banff with "your own local guide" and no crowded buses, from about $190, rated 4.4 from 313 reviews. It visits Lake Minnewanka and Bow Falls, and spots wildlife where it can; bighorn sheep, elk and eagles are all possible here, never guaranteed. For a full day in a smaller vehicle, check the group size in the listing of the Moraine/Minnewanka tour from Canmore or Banff; its summary doesn't state it.
On a budget
The cheapest full day here is Explore 9 Iconic Banff Spots in 1 Day, from about $60 for 10 hours, rated 4.7 from 21 reviews; it lists Lake Minnewanka, Two Jack Lake and Johnson Lake. The most-reviewed budget option is Gondola, Hot Springs, Lake Louise & Three Lakes, from about $75, 4.5 from 268 reviews. On both, see whether the gondola and hot springs entries are in the price; if they are not, the cheap tour gets less cheap. And if you want the boat, add about $84 for the cruise and make sure the stop is long enough.
Off-season
Pick the tour for its other stops, because the cruise isn't an option. The Moraine/Minnewanka tour above is the most reliable way to see this lake when the Moraine road is closed, and the budget days still pull in at the shore. For an evening at the lake from May to October, a stargazing tour with a Minnewanka stop and telescopes at Two Jack Lake is covered on the stargazing and wildlife page.
The cruise is the whole point
Then don't leave it to a tour. In season, buy the cruise ticket yourself, choose your sailing, and get to the dock by car or Route 6; do Lake Louise or the gondola as a separate day. Pursuit's own "Explore Banff" day, or its cruise-and-gondola package on GetYourGuide in season, are the confirmed bundles. Which channel costs less and cancels better is covered on the GetYourGuide vs Pursuit page.
If a tour like the Lake Minnewanka Cruise, Gondola & Top 3 Lakes appeals for the rest of its day, message the operator first and ask two things: is the cruise ticket included, and how long is the stop at the lake.

FAQ
Do Banff day tours include the Lake Minnewanka cruise?
Most don't. Third-party day tours with "Minnewanka cruise" in the title usually stop at the lake, with the cruise optional at your own cost, so check whether the cruise ticket is included in the listing. Pursuit's own "Explore Banff" coach day and its cruise tickets on GetYourGuide (in season only) are the confirmed bundles.
Is there a Banff day tour from Calgary with the Minnewanka cruise?
Several tours pick up in Calgary and stop at the lake, and some name the cruise in their title, but their listings don't confirm a cruise ticket. Pursuit's "Explore Banff" day, which includes cruise and gondola admission, can also start from Calgary; check its dates on Pursuit's website.
Can I combine the Lake Minnewanka cruise and the Banff Gondola?
Yes. In season GetYourGuide sells Pursuit's sightseeing + cruise + Banff Gondola package, and Pursuit's multi-attraction passes bundle the gondola with one cruise, Lake Minnewanka or Maligne Lake. The passes are non-refundable and include no transport. Prices are on the tickets page.
Do day tours go to Lake Minnewanka in winter?
Many do, because the lake stays reachable on the eastern side of the Minnewanka Loop. There is no cruise from mid-October to early May, so winter tours replace it with other stops; "Moraine/Minnewanka" tours bring you to Minnewanka when the Moraine Lake road is closed.
What does "Moraine/Minnewanka" mean in a tour title?
Lake Minnewanka replaces Moraine Lake on the days the Moraine road is closed. You visit one of the two, and neither version includes the cruise.
How long does a tour need to stop at the lake for me to take the cruise?
Allow about 90 minutes: a 10-minute walk from the parking lot to the dock, check-in at least 15 minutes before departure, about an hour on the boat, and the walk back.
