Lake Minnewanka Fishing: Charters, Permits and Rules

Lake Minnewanka fishing means lake trout: you need a national park fishing permit (not a provincial licence), the season runs from the Saturday of the Victoria Day long weekend to Labour Day, and you may keep two lake trout a day. The easiest way to catch one is a guided boat, either Pursuit's own trip or the Banff Adventures charter.

Fishing Lake Minnewanka: the short version

Lake Minnewanka is the big-fish lake of Banff National Park: more than 140 m (460 ft) deep at its deepest, about 21 km (13 mi) long, and a lake where you may actually keep a fish. Lake trout are the species you may take home, two per angler per day. Everything else goes back.

You need two things in your pocket: a national park fishing permit and a park pass. Alberta provincial licences are not valid in the park. The season is short and fixed, from the Saturday of the Victoria Day long weekend to Labour Day, and there is no ice fishing.

The decision most visitors face is guided or not. If you have a few hours and want a real chance at a lake trout, go with a guide: both outfits at the lake supply the boat, the sonar, the tackle and the permit. If you mostly want to cast a line from shore at sunrise, you can, but the rules are tighter than many people expect. Both routes are below.

What you can catch: lake trout, and everything else goes back

Lake trout are the draw. Historically, fish of over 20 kg (44 lb) came out of this lake; nobody promises you one of those, but the size of the lake and its depth are why anglers make the drive. Other fish in the lake include mountain whitefish.

The limit is simple and strict:

  • 2 lake trout per day from Lake Minnewanka. Two fillets count as one fish.
  • All other species: catch and release.
  • Release fish where you caught them, not somewhere else on the lake.

Kids under 16 can fish free without their own permit if they're with a permit holder 16 or older, but their catch counts toward that adult's limit. A family of four with one permit still goes home with two lake trout at most.

Parks Canada has a mercury advisory for lake trout. If you plan to eat your catch, especially if you're pregnant or cooking for children, read the advisory first and keep portions modest.

The national park fishing permit

Every angler 16 and older needs a national park fishing permit, valid in Banff, Jasper, Yoho and Kootenay. It is currently $15 a day or $51.25 for a year, and it is sold at park visitor centres and at the Lake Minnewanka boat dock. You also need a valid park pass to be in the park at all; getting there has the current pass prices.

Two shortcuts make this easier. First, both guided options include the park fishing licence, so charter guests don't buy one separately. Second, if you'll fish on your own for four or more days in the mountain parks within a year, the annual permit is the cheaper buy.

Fishing from shore or from a boat at Lake Minnewanka also needs Parks Canada's free aquatic invasive species self-certification permit (Clean, Drain, Dry). It's separate from the fishing permit, it costs nothing, and it is how Parks Canada keeps invasive species out of the lake.

Season and fishing hours

The open season on Lake Minnewanka, and on nearby Two Jack Lake and the Ghost Lakes, runs from the Saturday of the Victoria Day long weekend to Labour Day. Outside those dates the lake is closed to fishing, and that includes winter: there is no ice fishing on Minnewanka.

Within the season you may not fish from two hours after sunset to one hour before sunrise. In midsummer that still leaves very early mornings, which is when the lake is usually calm and the parking lot still has room. Afternoon winds are common on Minnewanka, so plan your time on the water for the morning if you can.

Two nearby waters catch people out: Johnson Lake and Cascade Ponds are closed to fishing, even though they're on the same loop road. The schedule page covers what's open at the lake month by month.

The rules that catch people out

Lake Minnewanka is Parks Canada's "Special Tactics Zone" for aquatic invasive species, and some rules here are stricter than anywhere else in the park.

The park-wide gear rules apply too:

  • No natural bait and no scent. Lures and flies only.
  • No lead tackle under 50 g.
  • Lures may carry at most two treble hooks; one line per angler.
  • Barbless hooks are recommended, not mandatory. A single barbless hook makes releasing fish quicker and kinder, and you'll be releasing anything that isn't a lake trout.
  • Private canoes, kayaks, paddleboards and inflatables are prohibited on the lake, so they're out as fishing platforms too. See boat rentals for what is allowed on the water.

Fines for breaking the aquatic invasive species rules go up to $25,000. The rules are clear enough that nobody needs to test them.

Guided fishing: Pursuit vs the Banff Adventures charter

Two outfits guide on Lake Minnewanka, and both include the national park fishing licence. Pursuit, which also runs the cruise and the rental boats, sells its own Fishing Experience. Banff Adventures and Banff Fishing Unlimited are one outfit sharing an office at 211 Bear Street in Banff: Banff Adventures books, Banff Fishing Unlimited guides. Their private charter is the one you can book on GetYourGuide.

Which to choose. Solo or a couple on a budget: Pursuit's per-angler price is the cheapest way onto a guided boat. The Banff Adventures shared trip only runs with at least three adults, so it suits groups more than lone anglers. For a private boat for two, Pursuit's half-day at about $700 plus GST undercuts the $850 direct charter, while the Banff Adventures boat takes up to six (Pursuit's take five), which makes it the better deal for a group of four to six.

About the GetYourGuide price. The private fishing charter on GetYourGuide is a 4-hour private trip with a minimum of two guests. It is currently from about $530 on GetYourGuide; check in the checkout whether that's per person or per boat. If it's per boat for two, it's the cheapest private option on the lake; if it's per person, booking direct is cheaper. Most tours on GetYourGuide can be cancelled for free up to a set time before; check the listing. The Banff Adventures page has more on the outfit.

Prices are in CAD. Pursuit quotes before GST; Banff Adventures doesn't say whether its prices include it, so ask when you book.

What a charter day looks like

A guided morning on the lake follows a predictable rhythm. This is the Banff Adventures charter; Pursuit's trip is an hour shorter, so check its meeting instructions when you book.

A 4-hour charter, start to finish
  1. Park at the Lake Minnewanka lotDrivers should allow an hour; summer lots fill by mid-morning

  2. Meet your guide at the dockOr ride Roam Route 6 from downtown Banff

  3. Head out on a 24-ft hardtop boatLicence, rods, tackle and sonar are supplied

  4. The guide uses sonar to find fishYou keep up to 2 lake trout per angler; others go back

  5. Back at the dockTips aren't included

Bring food and water (none is included on the Banff Adventures trip), a warm layer and a rain shell even in July: the lake is a little cooler than town, and windier. Sunglasses help on the water. Leave the waders at home; nobody needs them on a boat and they're banned here anyway.

If you're new to fishing, say so when you book. Banff Adventures pitches its trips at novices and experts alike, and any guide would rather know in advance.

Fishing on your own: shore and rental boats

Shore fishing at Lake Minnewanka is legal and popular, but it works within tight limits: no waders, no bait, the self-certification permit, and a fishing permit for everyone 16 and over. Without a boat and sonar your odds of a lake trout are lower, so treat shore fishing as a peaceful morning that might end with a fish.

A few tips that stay inside the rules:

  • Fish early. You may start an hour before sunrise; the lake is often calmest then and the lots are empty.
  • Expect a moving shoreline. The reservoir drops by up to about 5 m between spring and autumn, so the shore you fished in June may be a long walk from the water by Labour Day.
  • Mind the closures. The shore between Stewart Canyon and Sheep Point closes each spring, roughly May to the end of June. From July 10 to September 15, beyond the Stewart Canyon bridge, you must be in a group of at least four and carry bear spray. Details are on the hikes page.
  • Carry bear spray on the shore. Grizzlies feed along the north shore in summer.
  • Watch the wind. Afternoon gusts on Minnewanka are sudden; pack up if waves build.

For a do-it-yourself boat, Pursuit rents 16-ft motorboats for 4–5 people at the dock, walk-up only, from about $170–205 for the first hour plus GST. The renter must be 18 or older, and you stay inside the designated rental area. The dock also sells the park fishing permit. Boat rentals has prices, hours and safety notes. A private motorboat is allowed only after a Parks Canada aquatic invasive species inspection by appointment.

Off-season, there's no fishing at the lake at all. The guided outfits run within the park season; if a booking calendar shows dates outside it, check with the operator before you pay. For a winter or shoulder-season trip, the cruise, hikes and stargazing around the lake are covered in things to do.
