Lake Minnewanka operators — who runs the cruise, fishing and tours

One company, Pursuit, runs the Lake Minnewanka cruise, the boat rentals and a guided fishing trip from the dock. Everything else — fishing charters, evening safaris, stargazing, a helicopter flight and dozens of day tours — comes from separate Banff-area operators. Here is who does what, how we review them, and our score for each, starting with Pursuit.

Who runs what at Lake Minnewanka

The short version: one company on the water, several around it. Pursuit, under its Banff Jasper Collection brand, holds the dock. It is the only company running sightseeing cruises on the lake, it rents the kayaks, canoes and motorboats at the boathouse, and it sells its own guided fishing trip. If you want to be on Lake Minnewanka with a guide and you aren't fishing, you are on a Pursuit boat.

Everyone else works around that. A Banff fishing outfit keeps its own charter boats at the lake. Tour companies in town drive guests to the shore for a walk, a photo stop, a sunset or a night under the stars. One helicopter operator flies over the lake from outside the park. And a long list of day-tour agencies put "Minnewanka" in their tour titles, with very different ideas of what that means.

Pursuit: the cruise, the boathouse and a fishing trip

Pursuit is a big attractions company: its parent, Pursuit Attractions and Hospitality, also runs the Banff Gondola, the Columbia Icefield Adventure and the Maligne Lake Cruise in Jasper. At Minnewanka it sells four scheduled sailings, from the hour-long Classic, currently from about $84 per adult with GST (all prices on this site are CAD), to the 18+ Beer Voyage. Its cruise tickets bought direct are non-refundable, which is the single most important fact about booking with it.

The boathouse is walk-up only and not sold online; renters must be 18 or over. The guided Fishing Experience is a 3-hour trip with up to 5 anglers, licence and gear included. Our Pursuit review covers the company, the Brewster name, the terms and the score; the hour on the boat is on the cruise guide, and fares on tickets and prices.

Fishing: Banff Adventures and Banff Fishing Unlimited

These are two names for one outfit. Banff Adventures, an activity agency at 211 Bear Street in Banff, sells the trips; Banff Fishing Unlimited, at the same address, supplies the guides. They run private charters (currently $850 direct for one or two anglers, up to 6 per boat) and a shared trip that sails only with at least three adults. Their 4-hour private fishing charter is also on GetYourGuide, from about $530; check in the checkout whether that is per person or per boat.

They are the specialist; Pursuit's 3-hour trip is the cheaper seat for one or two anglers. Our Banff Adventures review compares the two, and the fishing guide has the permits, season and catch limits.

Evening, wildlife and stargazing tours

Discover Banff Tours, a family-owned company on Banff Avenue, runs the big 2-hour Evening Wildlife Safari from April to October with hotel pickup and up to 24 guests per guide. Its routes follow current wildlife activity, so a Minnewanka stop is not promised, and wildlife never is. The Discover Banff Tours review explains who it suits.

Into the Wild Tours runs a small-group evening trip (up to 13 guests) from May to October: a guided walk on the Minnewanka shore, then about two hours of stargazing at Two Jack Lake with a telescope, heated chairs and hot drinks. It is the Lake Minnewanka stargazing tour on GetYourGuide, from about $142, or about $125 direct. We haven't written a full review of it yet; the helicopter, stargazing and wildlife page covers it alongside the other evening options. Banff is not a Dark Sky Preserve (Jasper is), and the aurora is possible, never guaranteed.

The helicopter flight

Alpine Helicopters sells the only heli tour that covers the lake: "Spirit Water", a 30-minute flight from its Stoney Nakoda base near Morley, east of Canmore toward Calgary, currently $349 per person. It flies over Lake Minnewanka and does not land, because take-offs and landings inside national parks are prohibited. Its Canmore flights don't cover Minnewanka, and its GetYourGuide listing is currently off sale. Details are in the Alpine Helicopters review.

Day-tour agencies and "cruise" in the title

Many small van and coach companies sell Banff day tours that visit the lake, often with "Lake Minnewanka cruise" in the title. Most only stop at the lake: the cruise is optional and at your own cost. At $70–110 for an 8–10-hour day with a gondola stop, the price can't cover both a gondola ticket and a cruise ticket. Some listings that say "Minnewanka" describe Johnson Lake, and "Moraine/Minnewanka" tours swap Minnewanka in when the Moraine Lake road is closed.

So before you book, check whether the cruise ticket is included in the listing. In the off-season (mid-October to early May) there is no cruise at all, and these tours replace it with other stops. The Lake Minnewanka Cruise, Gondola and Top 3 Lakes tour, from about $95, is a typical listing to read closely, and our day tours guide sorts the rest.

One more name worth clearing up: the Banff Canoe Club and its Big Canoe and kayak trips are on the Bow River in town, not on Lake Minnewanka. On Minnewanka, paddling means Pursuit's rental boats, because private canoes, kayaks and paddleboards are prohibited on the lake (more on the rentals page).

How we review operators

We don't run tours or sell tickets; we compare them and link to them. When you book through a GetYourGuide link on this site we may earn a commission, at no extra cost to you, and the commission does not decide what we recommend; no operator pays to be reviewed or scored. The details are on our affiliate disclosure.

Each review is built from the operator's own published products, prices and terms at the time of writing, the guest ratings on GetYourGuide where a listing exists, and Parks Canada's rules for the lake (permits, closures, watercraft and wildlife). Where sources disagree, we say so rather than pick the friendlier number. We score on a 5-point scale across the things that decide a booking:

  • The experience: what you actually get for your time, and how well it is run
  • Value: the price against the length, group size and what's included
  • Price clarity: whether you can see the full price, tax included, before you pay
  • Flexibility: cancellation, date changes and what happens when the weather turns
  • Fit with the lake: whether the product really delivers Lake Minnewanka, or just borrows its name

Prices and ratings change, so treat every figure as "currently" and check the live listing. If you are choosing where to buy rather than who to go with, the GetYourGuide vs Pursuit direct comparison covers price, refunds and support channel by channel.

Who operates the Lake Minnewanka cruise?

Pursuit, under its Banff Jasper Collection brand. It is the only company running sightseeing cruises on the lake, and it also runs the boat rentals and a guided fishing trip from the same dock.

Is there more than one boat tour company on Lake Minnewanka?

For sightseeing cruises, no: only Pursuit. Fishing charters are the exception: Banff Adventures and Banff Fishing Unlimited, one outfit, run their own guided boats alongside Pursuit's fishing trip.

Who offers fishing charters on Lake Minnewanka?

Two outfits: Pursuit's 3-hour Fishing Experience, and Banff Adventures with Banff Fishing Unlimited, which run private and shared charters. Both include the national park fishing licence.

Do Banff day tours with "Minnewanka cruise" in the title include the cruise?

Usually not. Most stop at the lake and leave the cruise optional at your own cost, so check whether the cruise ticket is included in the listing. Out of season there is no cruise and the tours swap in other stops.

Is there a helicopter tour that lands at Lake Minnewanka?

No. Alpine Helicopters' Spirit Water flight leaves from near Morley and flies over the lake, but take-offs and landings inside national parks are prohibited.
