What the Lake Minnewanka cruise costs

The Classic Cruise, the one-hour sailing most people mean when they say "the Lake Minnewanka cruise", currently costs from about $80 plus GST per adult (about $84 with GST) and about $55 with GST for children 6–15. Kids 5 and under ride free. All prices here are in CAD.

That "from" figure is the floor, not the average. Prices vary by date and departure time — the 'from' price is the lowest — so two sailings on the same day can cost different amounts. Pursuit, which runs the cruise, doesn't publish fixed figures for its specialty sailings, so the table says only what can be said with confidence.

The Premium Cruise costs more than the Classic, and the Beer Voyage is the priciest of the scheduled sailings — check the live price when you book. Anyone quoting an exact Premium figure is probably reading an old blog. If you only want to see the lake from the water, the Classic does the job. Pay up for the Premium if the snacks, the better seats and the quieter check-in matter to you, or for the Beer Voyage if you want the longer run to Devil's Gap; the evening sailings guide covers both.

GST: why you see two prices for the same ticket

A 5% GST applies to cruise tickets. Pursuit's online prices show GST included in the total, so its booking page lands on about $84 for an adult Classic. Some sites quote the pre-tax figure of about $80, which is the same ticket before tax. When you compare prices across sites, check which one you're looking at before deciding that one is cheaper.

The difference is small on one ticket and adds up for a family: on two adult and two child Classic fares, the GST comes to roughly $13. Parks Canada's park-pass prices, by contrast, already include tax (more on the pass below).

Children, babies and families

Pursuit's age bands apply to every cruise: adult 16+, child 6–15, and 5 and under free. "Free" doesn't mean "skip the booking": under-sixes must be included in it. A 16-year-old pays the adult fare, even though Parks Canada lets them into the park for free.

We haven't found a family fare for the Classic. The family deal is the Junior Explorer Cruise: one free child (6–15) for each full-paying adult; extra children pay the child rate; can't be combined with other offers. Two adults and two kids pay two adult fares and nothing for the kids. It runs only from late June to Labour Day, at 12:40 p.m. and 3:20 p.m., and the games and treasure hunt are aimed at roughly 6–12-year-olds, so a 15-year-old may find it a bit young.

To put the Classic in numbers: two adults and two children aged 6–15 come to roughly $280 with GST at the 'from' price, before the park pass. Kids on any cruise can also join the free "Rockies Rangers" badge program.

Discounts that exist, and the promo-code question

The Alberta resident rate. Alberta residents can save up to 35% on the Classic Cruise only, booked on Pursuit's website with a valid Alberta postal code and agreeing to receive Pursuit's email offers. It doesn't apply to the Premium Cruise or the Beer Voyage, and you won't get it on GetYourGuide or other third-party sites.

Promo codes and coupons. No public promo codes for the cruise are documented, so a "Lake Minnewanka cruise promo code" on a coupon site is worth nothing until it actually works at checkout. The legitimate ways to pay less are duller but real:

  • Book online and ahead. Pursuit says its best rate is online in advance, and since prices vary by date and departure time, it pays to compare a few slots.
  • Use the Alberta rate if you have an Alberta postal code (Classic only).
  • Bring little ones free: 5 and under ride free.
  • Pick the Junior Explorer between late June and Labour Day if you have kids: one goes free per full-paying adult.
  • Buy a Pursuit Pass if you'll visit several of Pursuit's attractions anyway (next section).

Pursuit Pass and other bundles with the cruise

Pursuit Pass. Pursuit's multi-attraction passes (currently Pursuit Pass Rockies Lite, Rockies and Rockies Value) bundle the Banff Gondola, Columbia Icefield and other Pursuit sights with one cruise — Lake Minnewanka or Maligne Lake (you get a discount code for the other). Rockies Value restricts some attractions, including the cruise, to after 3:30 p.m. and can save up to 40%.

The small print matters more than the headline. Passes are non-refundable, can't be bought for same-day use, include no transport, and their valid dates have been shorter than the cruise season, so check the pass dates. In spring and autumn, when the last boats leave around 5 p.m., Rockies Value's 3:30 p.m. rule leaves only a few Minnewanka sailings. A pass pays off if you're doing the Icefield and the gondola anyway, not for a single Banff afternoon.

Cruise plus gondola. In season, GetYourGuide sells a Pursuit-supplied Lake Minnewanka Cruise and Banff Gondola combo that really does include both tickets; it is off sale outside the cruise season. Pursuit also sells its own guided coach day, Brewster Sightseeing's "Explore Banff", which includes Banff Gondola and cruise admission; its prices exclude taxes and fees, and it can be cancelled up to 24 hours before.

Third-party day tours. Many GetYourGuide day tours have "Lake Minnewanka cruise" in the title and cost from about $70 to $110 for 8–10 hours. At that price they can't cover both a gondola ticket and a cruise ticket that alone costs about $84. Most of them stop at the lake and leave the cruise optional, at your own cost, so check whether the cruise ticket is included in the listing before you book. Out of season they swap the cruise for other stops. The day tours guide sorts out which is which; the Cruise, Gondola and Top 3 Lakes tour, from about $95, is a typical example to read closely.

Pursuit direct or GetYourGuide

Pursuit is the only company running sightseeing cruises on the lake, so every ticket is ultimately a Pursuit ticket. The choice is where you buy it.

Best forBeer Voyage, Junior Explorer, Alberta discountGuest ratings on the listing; comparing the cruise with day tours—

Our take: if you want the Beer Voyage, the Junior Explorer or the resident rate, go direct, because nobody else sells them. If you want the plain Classic, the GetYourGuide cruise ticket (in season only) costs about the same, shows other guests' ratings, and is easy to compare with the day tours. Don't assume GetYourGuide means free cancellation on this one: most tours on GetYourGuide can be cancelled for free up to a set time before, but check the listing's cancellation terms for the cruise ticket. The platform comparison goes into payment, support and the rest.

Refunds, changes and missed sailings

Tickets bought from Pursuit are non-refundable. That's the most important line on this page, and the reason not to book the first warm-looking day you see in a forecast two weeks out.

What you can do is change: use the "Modify My Booking" link in your confirmation email. Changes are subject to availability and may come at a different rate.

If you miss your sailing, you can rebook a later sailing if there's room, for a rebooking fee (currently $15 per person). In July and August, when the lots fill by mid-morning, parking is the easiest way to miss the boat; Pursuit asks you to allow plenty of time: up to two hours if you're driving in summer.

If the weather cancels it. The season and the sailings are weather dependent, and Pursuit doesn't publish what happens to tickets when it cancels a sailing: contact Pursuit about rebooking. On GetYourGuide, the listing's terms apply.

The ticket office and buying on the day

There is a ticket office at the dock, but walk-up seats are first come, first served and a given time isn't guaranteed. The office sits on the boarding docks, a 10-minute walk from the parking lot past the Black Anchor Snack Shop, and opens during the cruise season from shortly before the first sailing to around the last one; it's closed in winter. Your odds are better on the first sailings and on weekdays, which are calmer; on a sunny summer weekend, expect to wait or to settle for a later time. If a specific time matters, book online first.

Whatever you buy, check in at the ticket office at least 15 minutes before departure. If someone in your group uses a wheelchair and you booked online, call Pursuit's ticket office (403-762-4425) to arrange it: most boats take wheelchairs on the back deck only.

Groups: up to 14 tickets online; 15 or more, call Pursuit's group line. Private charters are quote-based.

What the ticket doesn't cover, and what's free

The park pass: you pay for it. Lake Minnewanka is in Banff National Park, and a park pass is required on top of the cruise ticket. Currently $12.25 per adult per day, $10.75 seniors, free for youth 17 and under, or $24.50 for a family or group in one vehicle (up to 7 people); the annual Discovery Pass is $83.50 adult, $71.50 senior, $167.50 family. Parks Canada fees include tax. For a car of two adults and two kids, that's $24.50 a day.

Parking: free. Parking is free, but the lots fill by mid-morning in July and August (earlier on weekends). Arrive before 9 a.m. or take Route 6.

The bus: free with your ticket. Roam Transit Route 6 from downtown Banff is free with a same-day, pre-purchased Lake Minnewanka Cruise ticket — show it to the driver. Otherwise the fare is currently $2 for adults, $1 for youth and seniors; young children ride free. In peak summer (roughly mid-June to Labour Day) Pursuit has also run a free shuttle from downtown Banff hotels for cruise ticket holders — check when you book. Routes and timings are in getting there.

Food: not included on the Classic. Bring your own snacks or buy them at the Black Anchor Snack Shop, the only food at the lake. Boat rentals at the dock are priced separately and sold walk-up only; see rentals.

Booking when the cruise isn't running

The cruise season runs from early or mid-May to Canadian Thanksgiving Monday in October, weather permitting. Outside it there's no cruise, no ticket office and no snack shop, and the GetYourGuide cruise ticket and combo disappear from sale until the next season; the Lake Minnewanka tours on GetYourGuide show what can be booked in the meantime.

Pursuit opens online sales about 90 days ahead, so planning months out means waiting for the booking window, then moving fast for July and August weekends. The schedule page shows when each sailing runs. Outside the season, day tours that list the cruise keep running but replace it with other stops, so you still see the lake from the shore; check what each listing includes.

FAQ

How much is the Lake Minnewanka cruise?

The Classic Cruise is currently from about $80 plus GST per adult (about $84 with GST) and about $55 with GST for children 6–15; kids 5 and under ride free. Prices vary by date and departure time. The Premium Cruise and the Beer Voyage cost more.

Can you buy Lake Minnewanka cruise tickets at the dock?

Yes, at the ticket office on the boarding docks during the cruise season. Walk-up seats are first come, first served, so a particular departure isn't guaranteed; book online if the time matters.

Is there a Lake Minnewanka cruise promo code?

No public promo codes are documented. Real savings come from booking online ahead, the Alberta resident rate on the Classic, free rides for kids 5 and under, the Junior Explorer's free child per paying adult, and a Pursuit Pass if you'll visit several Pursuit attractions.

Can I get a refund on my cruise ticket?

Tickets bought from Pursuit are non-refundable, but you can change the date through "Modify My Booking", subject to availability and rate. If you miss your sailing, you can rebook a later one if there's room for a $15 per person fee. On GetYourGuide, check the listing's cancellation terms.

Do you need a park pass for the Lake Minnewanka cruise?

Yes. The lake is in Banff National Park, and the pass isn't included in the cruise ticket. Youth 17 and under enter free; a family or group day pass covers up to 7 people in one vehicle. Parking at the lake is free.

Is it cheaper to book the cruise on GetYourGuide?

The price is similar to booking direct. GetYourGuide is handy for ratings and keeping your bookings in one place, but only Pursuit sells the Beer Voyage, the Junior Explorer and the Alberta resident rate.
